After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual Africa Travel Indaba was back in full flair in Durban this past month with 3700 delegates attending and a total of 22 000 scheduled meetings taking place between exhibitors and buyers.
Besides the Travel Indaba giving the tourism industry a much-needed shot in the arm, a volley of new developments have been announced demonstrating that travel is opening up as people get moving again:
- SAA resumes flights on the busy JHB/DBN route earlier this year.
- Construction of the beachfront’s iconic Durban Eye to commence in July 2022. The new ferris wheel will be located near the new passenger cruise terminal overlooking the bluff.
- Opening of the 200-bedroom Radisson Blu hotel in uMhlanga.
- Royal Eswatini Air to commence direct flights to Durban, Joburg and Cape Town in June.
- Air Link opens new direct route between Harare and Durban on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.
- Efforts to reactivate direct flights with Air Namibia, Qatar and Emirates
These exciting new developments will improve business and leisure travel in the southern Africa region while the tourism continues to recover after the pandemic.
